On Commissioning

Panel Discussion with Apsara DiQuinzio, Gary Garrels, and Anthony Huberman

Apsara DiQuinzio (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Phyllis C. Wattis MATRIX Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum)

Gary Garrels (Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA)

Moderated by Anthony Huberman (Director and Chief Curator at the CCA Wattis Institute)

The Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts is a nonprofit exhibition venue and research institute. As an exhibition space, it commissions and shows new work by artists from around the world. As a research institute, it dedicates an entire year to reflecting on the work of a single artist, which informs a regular series of public events, texts, and research by other relevant artists and thinkers.

Today the Wattis presents a panel discussion, “On Commissioning”, at the artists’ bar they have designed at Pier 70. Bay Area curators Apsara DiQuinzio, Gary Garrels, and Anthony Huberman discuss the rewards and challenges of working with contemporary artists on new commissions.
