Arash Fayez: Not a Film

Performance

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in partnership with Untitled, San Francisco presents Not a Film, a performance project by visual artist and performer Arash Fayez who is one of the featured artists for YBCA's Live Practice program. Not a Film is an ongoing series exploring the intersections of cinema, performance, and music through reenactments of cinematic moments. Over the course of two days, January 14 and 15, Fayez will perform two reenactments from the series on site at Untitled, San Francisco.

On January 14, Fayez will reenact a key part of Bicyclerān (The Cyclist, 1987) by Mohsen Makhmalbāf. In tribute to the film's protagonist Nasim, an Afghan immigrant in Iran who rides a bicycle continuously for a week to raise money for his gravely ill wife, the artist will bike in circles without stopping until he can no longer physically perform.

On January 15, Fayez will stage a reenactment from Bande à part (Band of Outsiders, 1964) by Jean-Luc Godard—also echoed in The Dreamers (2003) by Bernardo Bertolucci—of scenes where the characters attempt to break the world record for running in the Louvre museum.

Arash Fayez is an artist, curator and educator based between San Francisco, Tehran, and other locations. Spanning video, performance, and photography, his practices intertwine to create parafictional and multi-layered projects informed by notions of displacement and bicamerality. Through storytelling based on partial memories and notions of interstitial space, his works confront sociopolitical issues while engaging the role of found footage and archival materials in constructing these narratives.

YBCA Live Practice is a Bay Area, local-artists-led activations series which takes place in and around YBCA's public spaces. It is a monthly night of contemporary art programming that may include conceptual activations, physical interventions and other time-based installation works featuring Bay Area artists.
