Balancing Act

Panel Discussion moderated by Marte Danielsen Jølbo

Three non-profit arts institutions from Stavanger, Norway are participating in the 2018 edition of UNTITLED, San Francisco: Kunsthall Stavanger, Prosjektrom Normanns, and Rogaland Kunstsenter.

Contemporary Art Stavanger (CAS), as a Norway-based online platform for the dissemination of information and regional critical discourse, will take this opportunity to reflect on the environments for artistic production, presentation, collaboration and criticism in both Stavanger and San Francisco.

Through an open panel discussion with invited Stavanger and San Francisco-based guests, the program will explore the often precarious position of regional arts institutions and practitioners working within a larger international context. What strategies do different types of institutions employ in balancing a local outreach and international relevance? What are some of the benefits and challenges in working regionally? And how do writing and publishing practices play a role in moderating the relationship between the international and the local?

The two-part panel discussion will first focus on the regional cultural producers – artist run and non-profit institutions – followed by a conversation on independent publishing and critical discourse in relation to regional art scenes.

Panelists:

Geir Haraldseth (Rogaland Kunstsenter)

Margrethe Aanestad (Prosjektrom Normanns)

Devon Bella (Kadist Art Foundation)

Evan Reiser (City Limits)

Jeanne Gerrity (CCA Wattis Institute)

Claudia la Rocco (Open Space)

The discussion will be moderated by CAS editor Marte Danielsen Jølbo.
