Designed by Ann Hamilton in conjunction with an edition of 200 'welcome mats’ produced for sale through Workshop Residence, this larger-scale version is inspired by a sentence that the artist was asked by her ophthalmologist to read during an eye exam. Commonly presented at a 16-inch distance from the reader to test visual acuity, this excerpt is from Johanna Spyri’s classic children’s fiction story, Heidi. For the artist, the passage evokes a comforting, youthful nostalgia in a moment when, paradoxically, her doctor was testing for visual impairment often associated with aging.
