Miami Beach, FL. October 27, 2022 – Untitled Art is pleased to present a program of curated Special Projects, Monuments, performances, podcast conversations and events for the 2022 edition. In addition, at this year’s edition of the fair, six new prizes will be awarded to participating galleries and artists. This year marks the fair’s most international presentation to date, focusing on collaboration across the art community. Untitled Art’s programming, Special Projects, and Monuments series are part of an expanded curatorial platform spearheaded by Artistic Director Omar López-Chahoud in support of the wider arts ecosystem – both globally and locally in Miami. Selected artists, galleries, and non-profits will tackle topics from the environment, to race and diversity, to artificial intelligence in an effort to celebrate new and underrepresented voices.
Prizes will be awarded in support of exhibitors and artists. This initiative was launched this year, in line with the Untitled Art’s commitment to establishing opportunities for collaboration and support of the larger art ecosystem beyond the fair itself:
The Nest Prize by Vortic | As the leading virtual and augmented reality platform for the art world, Vortic partners with Untitled Art to launch The Nest Prize by Vortic, showcasing their ongoing commitment to supporting emerging artists and galleries. Vortic will also offer participating Nest galleries a dynamic platform to sustainably showcase their work in the form of a 3D and virtual extension of the sector to be hosted on their website and untitledartfairs.com and on-site through a VR experience.
21c Museum Hotels Acquisition Prize | “Founded by collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, 21c’s mission is to expand access to thought-provoking contemporary art,” says 21c Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites. “Each year at Untitled Miami, we have discovered new artists from all over the world, working in a wide range of media and addressing the pressing issues of our time. Laura Lee and Steve have acquired many of their works for the 21c collection. We are excited about discovering more visionary artists at Untitled Art, Miami Beach 2022, and expanding the collection further through the establishment of the 21c Museum Hotels Acquisition Prize.”
Colección Solo Acquisition Prize | This international arts project based in Madrid aims to foster, support and share the artwork of today. “As part of our commitment to supporting creative work, artists, and a lively contemporary scene, we see the role of fairs like Untitled as key.” — Colección Solo team on establishing the new art acquisition prize.
CCA Andratx Artist-in-Residence Prize | For more than twenty years CCA Andratx has been a production place and platform that has welcomed artists from all over the world. This year they are collaborating with Untitled Art to choose one artist from the fair’s 11th edition for one-month residency in Mallorca.
Last Resort Artist Retreat Residency Prize | Founded in 2021 by Derrick Adams, The Last Resort Artist Retreat offers Black artists reprieve from the daily in a community where creative freedom is expanded through fellowship, self-reflection and therapeutic services. “We are thrilled to partner with Untitled Art during Miami Art Week to present this residency prize and welcome an artist of African descent from Latin America and the Caribbean to our inaugural cycle of residents in 2023.” — Last Resort Artist Retreat team.
Pébéo Production Prize | A benchmark in the field of graphic art, the Pébéo family business has specialized in creating colors for many years. Striking the balance between innovation and an educational approach, the company promotes development and creativity through the practice of art. With Untitled Art fair, they will award an artist in 2023 who is working towards an institutional exhibition with an in-kind materials and cash hybrid prize towards production.
MONUMENTS, located west of the sand dunes on Miami Beach, features a selection of artworks open to the public. Presenting elements of the fair outside allows participating galleries and artists to interact with the city of Miami Beach and visitors in a wider capacity:
Swiss-born multi-media artist and environmental activist Katja Loher’s Lejos de lo visible (far from the visible) (2022) is a 5-channel video composition that addresses ecological urgencies, such as the plight of pollinators and changes in the ocean ecosystem caused by climate change. Bridging the world of art and science, to draw attention to the defining challenge of our time, climate change, Loher’s PLANKTON MANIFESTO series is a universal call to preserve underwater life. Collaged with her green screen studio shootings and microscopic footage provided by scientists, Lejos de lo visible (far from the visible) comprises of unique projections underscoring the threatened underwater world. Presented by LatchKey Gallery.
MAIA Contemporary brings Sabino Guisu’s large scale sculpture Cocijo (2022), a work that consists of steel, fiberglass, metal, and automotive paint on an MDF base that illustrates what the symbolic figure of Cocijo, the deity of rain and lightning among the ancient Zapotecs, would be like in the parallel universe of modernity. The artist’s work can be considered a continuous reflection between the sacred and the profane: how worldliness and religious sentiment coexist in today's life. Is it possible to reconcile both views? Art allows Sabino to guide his thoughts and show the ambiguity between modernity and the ancient past.
SPECIAL PROJECTS will be presented throughout the fair that call attention to key issues and new artistic voices:
Inspired by Buddhist prayer wheels, Amanda Keeley presents All is well All is well All is well (2022) a cylindrical sculpture embedded with a text from the Heart Sutra, written in the direction of the sun's movement across the sky. Despite the traditional clockwise rotation of meditation wheels, Keeley will ask that the audience turn the wheel three times to the left to experience the artwork. Not only does this increase the merit earned by the wheel's use, but offers a mind-stabilization technique that trains the mind while the body is in motion. The practitioner can repeat the mantra as often as possible during the wheel's turning, sending positive energy into our universe.
A special installation by American painter Angela Fraleigh for the VIP Lounge of Untitled Art 2022, re-imagines, and re-signifies female characters from familiar tales to challenge perceptions of the past and reimagine different futures. Titled The Raving Ones (2022), the 12 x 28 ft long painting and drawing installation consists of multiple paintings installed on hand-drawn wallpaper. Drawing on parallels between art production and spellcraft, Fraleigh’s work harnesses the magic of making the invisible, visible. Illuminating erased or forgotten female figures, her paintings unsettle narratives that seem familiar in order to shift perspectives and upend contemporary power dynamics. The work is presented by Sean Horton (Presents).
In celebration of the longstanding tradition of Untitled Art working with artists to activate the VIP Lounge, visitors this year will find an installation and group exhibition presented by BEVERLY’S, an artist-run exhibition and service industry platform founded in 2012 in the Lower East Side / Chinatown neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. Included artists are:Carlos Rosales-Silva, Heidi Norton, Alexandra Hammond, Leah Dixon, Azikiwe Mohammed, Jack Henry, Julia Colavita, Chris Herity, Stina Puotinen, Hayley Martell, Sonia Louise Davis, Spencer Young, Marie Anine Moller, and Ivan Forde.
From Room 57, Brecht Wright Gander’s latest sculptural works considers the border between a body and its environment.Markers of domestic interiors—for instance beige carpet—are used to summon a sense of the familiar set against ominously incomplete human forms. The repetitive actions of motors within the work suggest a mechanistic absence of free will, a few going so far to be on illuminated panels to imbue a sense of theatricality.
In collaboration with Center for Subtropical Affairs and FIU Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab, Above the Ground (2022) by Joyce Billet explores the connection between the natural and the digital and introduces tropical and botanical plants present in the Florida ecosystem. Drawings and paintings from photographs of the species were created to inform the integrated cuts, etchings and overall form of and on the resulting sculptural furniture pieces. The installation will be accompanied by a publication released by Exile Books.
Y.ES Contemporary presents Studio Lenca´s large scale paintings and sculptures that explore an estranged cultural heritage and universal themes of identity. Titled Ni de aquí, ni de allá (Not from here, not from there) (2022), this Spanish phrase is used frequently by bilingual and bicultural Latinx people to describe the intersecting identities of being displaced. Formally labelled an ‘illegal alien’ whilst living in the US, Salvadoran artist Studio Lenca now works from the UK. The title and phrase “ni de aquí, ni de allá” also speaks to the artist’s queer identity.
Artist Rachel Garrard will construct a temporary installation on Miami Beach titled Pathways Beyond Time, (2022) presented by Colector, in continuation of her site-specific, transitory installations that use nature as their medium. In the large rusted steel sculptures that emerge from the sand in reference of ancient traditions, the artist and landscape will co-create and co-design the surrounding space, recalibrating the environment to reveal its essential symbolic qualities via symbiotic interaction with the elements, the ocean and those who participate with the artwork.
Yucef Merhi’s tête-à-tête (2022), organized by Adriana Meneses, is a datagram installation that discloses for the first time the correspondence of two eminent cultural figures of the 20th century: French artist, August Herbin, and Romanian-born Venezuelan journalist, and founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, Sofía Ímber. The work is comprised of enlarged hand-written letters, postcards, envelopes, and photographs, sent between Herbin and Ímber [de Meneses] in the late 1950s. tête-à-tête allows people to gaze and navigate the historical, emotional, and pragmatic complexities that foster art and drive art history. This work is in collaboration with the University of Miami Libraries and the Sofía Ímber Collection.
Further onsite programming during Untitled Art includes the presentation of Walk the Authors (2018) by María La Ribot,presented by Max Estrella. This installation is made up of a number of wooden, mass-produced folding chairs, all covered with laser-engraved text. To read the text—which is comprised of personal stories—visitors must engage with the seats themselves by opening and closing, turning, and lowering them.
An additional interactive project spanning the fair is SEPTEMBER’s Viewfinder with Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo (ongoing) byLukaza Branfman-Verissimo. The project, inspired by, and dedicated to, artist, educator, and activist Corita Kent, invites visitors to practice seeing our world differently. Branfman-Verissimo will invite people to cut a 'view' from provided postcards and printouts, to both explore the fair though a unique lens, and bring their viewfinders outside to discover new ways of slow-looking and deep investigation of the surrounding area.
Courtesy of the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, Miami, and El Espacio 23, Ema Ri’s Language is leaving me, (2021) will materially possess the walls to expose organic patterns, shapes, and the extensive representations of life through excised paint, and plaster, coming alive from the inside out. A second-generation Cuban-American and queer artist, Ri’s practice contemplates the unseen relationships, communions, and felt impressions that everything and everyone experiences. Work by Ri will be featured in the significant upcoming exhibition You Know Who You Are: Recent Acquisitions of Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Perez Collection at El Espacio 23.
Following its premier at the Brooklyn Museum (October 28 - November 6, 2022), For Freedoms announces that For Freedoms News (FFN) will be presented in its second iteration at Untitled Art. Using the look and feel of broadcast news, this artist led project seeks to generate broader civic engagement in advance of the 2022 midterm elections which will be complete prior to the fair’s start. For Freedom’s activation in Miami will consist of an interview area and news set in parallel with a performance of roving “reporters on the street” recording live news throughout the fair. Through video and live reporting, For Freedoms will incorporate a variegated community of artists, collectors, dealers, press, and other fair-goers about the intricacies, banalities, and expansiveness of art, politics, and society within an art fair environment. Similar to the preceding format of FFN, the news set at Untitled Art will serve as a hub for correspondents to meet at allocated times and a backdrop for filmed content.
Val del Omar’s Por aquí ya no hay camino, (There’s no path here anymore), (circa 1961) is one of the first sound work installations presented as a Special Project at Untitled Art. Featuring a collection of sounds from the artist’s lab, which he called PLAT (Picto Lumínica Audio Tactil), the work is comprised of recordings from his movies, radio recordings, family conversations and reflections by him and others. After the artist’s passing, his lab’s contents were moved to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (Spain), where they were digitized in 2010. This work is presented by Max Estrella.
Shango | Digital Throne (2022) by Yelaine Rodriguez and presented by Auttrianna Projects is the third iteration of the conceptual artist’s immersive altars. Featuring a site-specific installation of video, photography, sculpture, and fiber work, the project conceptualizes a series of designed pieces related to Shango, the orishaof justice, thunder, and dance of the West African religion of Yoruba. In collaboration with Mare Residency Founder Auttrianna Ward, this version will incorporate digital offerings to Shango from various Afro-Diasporic artists working within video art including artists biarritzzz and Taína Cruz. Programming by Auttrianna Projects is sponsored by: Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), The55project, The Last Resort Artist Retreat, and Kalpa Art Advisory.
In a continued effort to amplify diverse voices, Untitled Art will select one participating gallery on an annual basis to present a special solo booth that highlights the work of an older or deceased artist who has made a significant contribution to contemporary art discourse. This year’s selected gallery is Galerie Christian Lethert (Cologne, Germany) who is exhibiting the work of 82-year-old artist Imi Knoebel, a German painter and sculptor known for his contributions to and shaping of 20th century Minimalist abstract art.
PERFORMANCES
Titling the Untitled: An Interview Series (2022) proposes a series of interviews in the “man-on-the-street” style. In these interviews with Untitled Art Fair founders, team, staff, galleries, and attendees, Locker Room artist Catherine Candor will ask a few questions that will be released via Instagram November 28th, 29th, and December 1st, 2022.
In addition, Studio Lenca will also offer a performance at Untitled Art this year. In Performance (2022) the artist willcarefully craft an elaborate costume based on their research into ‘Los Historiantes,’ the folkloric dancers of El Salvador. The costume, crafted out of found and recycled materials, is a metaphor for the artist’s quest for identity and representation as a displaced person. During the improvised movement piece, Studio Lenca will distribute wooden arrows to the audience. The arrows are a type of iconography used in their work to represent the barriers and obstacles encountered by their community, one that they will instruct the audience to take away with them to later destroy.
Fabiola Larios’s performanceINSTANT ART (2022) will demonstrate the process of exploring an artificial intelligence's latent space by generating and refining a series of prompts and resulting images. Presented by Lonely ROCKS.
Before the Wax Melts, a performance via drone by Miami-based artist Whitney Lynn will also take place during the fair. Sponsored by UW Arts, and told in the form of seven episodes, the project will be viewable from Lummus Park Beach on November 28, at unannounced intervals between the hours of 1:00-8:00pm. Before the Wax Melts reimagines the opening scene in the satirical film La Dolce Vita (1960) in a series of sculptural actions, stealing the setup of the iconic image as a starting point for considering more abstract ideas of spectacle, desire, amusement, and value. The title gives a subtle nod to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, further inviting questions regarding rapid advances in drone technology, their applications, and impact.
The Special Project Shango | Digital Throne (2022) by Yelaine Rodriguez and presented by Auttrianna Projects will inaugurate at Untitled Art with a live performance led by Kaila Paulino on November28th through traditional Afro-Dominican music, which transpired in the Batey (colonial-era sugar workers' towns) as a tribute to Afro-Diasporic culture in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States. The UNTITLED ART PODCAST SERIES also returns for a third year to serve an expanded audience. New this year are two dedicated days hosted by the fair's Programming Partners, Her Clique and [NAME], alongside additional conversations and panel discussions that expand on the presentations of the fair’s 2022 exhibitors:
Programming Partner [NAME] Dedicated Day: [NAME] Publications will present three podcasts that focus on the often overlooked and forgotten dimensions of Miami's cultural history. In these episodes, [NAME] will be joined by local artists, gallerists, and historians to reactivate the memory of some of Miami’s vital art scenes from the past 40 years. Episode One will focus on the contributions of Black artists and intellectuals that don’t often figure in local art histories; Episode Two will be a behind-the-scenes look at the lost stories of a 90s Miami art scene; and Episode Three an in-depth look at the work of late Chilean-American artist Enrique Castro-Cid.
Programming Partner Her Clique Dedicated Podcast Day: The online platform Her Clique will host a day of art panel podcasts that will focus on art and activism. The podcast guests include artists, galleries and curators who will discuss various good-cause initiatives they are involved with and how art can be a tool for activism and positive, social change. Her Clique is a New York-based, curated platform for specially commissioned artworks created by women and non-binary artists for charity.

Founded in 2012, Untitled Art is the leading independent contemporary art fair taking place annually on the sands of Miami Beach. Untitled Art 2022 will take place during Miami Art Week from Tuesday November 29 through Saturday December 3, with a VIP Preview on Monday November 28. The fair coincides with Art Basel Miami Beach, held from Thursday December 1 to Saturday December 3.
