We Eat Art with Mary Reid Kelly

Fredericks & Freiser on Untitled, Radio

We Eat Art is a podcast featuring the most in depth one-on-one interviews with contemporary artists available on the internet. Hosts John Mejias and Zak Smith talk to a wide variety of fellow painters, sculptors, installation artists and other art-world figures about their lives, techniques, philosophies and biographies. It's also funny.

Today on Untitled, Radio we broadcast Episode 5, with special guest Mary Reid Kelley.

Mary Reid Kelley has just been officially declared a genius by the MacArthur foundation. We talk to her about her densely allusive videos that refer to classical mythology and literature and freak everyone out plus puns, the nature of collaboration, racism as original sin, the minotaur as house-proud, church volleyball as a theater of toxic masculinity, funny-scary, AC Swinburne and Slayer as terminal artists, how Ophelia can't even, crying to your art dealer and much more.

Hosts:

Zak Smith is an artist living in Los Angeles, California. His work is in many collections public and private including The Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. He has written for many publications including Vice and Artforum and has a regular column at Artillery Magazine. Books published about Zak's work include Pictures of Girls, We Did Porn and Pictures Showing What Happens On Each Page Of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow.

John Mejias is an artist and art teacher living in New York. Some of his projects include his ongoing comic/zine/artist book series Paping. He is also the founder of the Paping soapbox derby, the author of the children's book The Hungry Brothers and is the recipient of the Warhol grant for his 3D shadow puppet show I'm Wuurried.
